I love old photos like this. I have a good collection myself, with more of a military theme but some family portraits too. I have already acquired a number of new ones this trip, thanks to Boria. You can see some of my collection HERE.

I enjoy looking closely for details and clues as to what was going on. This rich family was really stylin' for this photo. Poor little guy in knickers and school uniform, the only boy and with THREE older sisters. Lovely girls, though. The two on the left are wearing the same dress and hair styles. All three are wearing he same boots. Dad is wearing checked wool pants. He has no badges of offices, only wearing a a pocket watch on a chain. It's the only jewelry or adornment in the photo. My guess is that he is a rich merchant. His wife's dress is likely very expensive.

The setting is an upper-crust porait studio, much finer than I usually see. That woven rug would probably be very expensive if it still exists today.
